Artistic Director & Chief Conductor

Matthew co-founded the Monash Law String Orchestra (MLSO) in 2024 as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, helping transform it from a 12-member ensemble to a thriving 35-piece orchestra in just one year. His dynamic, engaging conducting style and carefully crafted arrangements have defined the ensemble's unique artistic identity. Under his leadership, the MLSO has presented several notable collaborations, including the world premiere of Evan Lawson's evocative work Euridices Cave and a special performance with acclaimed harpist Su Min Lee. Pines' innovative programming and inclusive approach have fostered a welcoming yet ambitious musical community where law students come together to achieve exceptional artistic results and have a great time.

Musical Director

Matthew brings extensive experience as a musical director and conductor for school and community theater productions. Known for his patient yet effective teaching approach, he skillfully guides casts through learning vocal parts and harmonies. His ability to work with singers of all skill levels - from beginners to seasoned performers - has made him a sought-after conductor for musical theater.
